As the excitement for the upcoming eclipse grows, it’s essential to remember that our furry family members also need protection during this astronomical event. While eclipses are a fascinating spectacle for humans, they can pose unexpected risks to our pets. At Smart Dog Dallas, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure all our canine companions are safe and comfortable during the eclipse and we encourage pet owners to do the same.

What is Smart Dog Dallas Doing?

Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve decided that all our canine companions will remain indoors during the event, so your pet will be safe. Other then that, it will be business as usual.

Understanding the Risks

Unlike humans, pets do not typically look directly at the sun, which minimizes the risk of eye damage from the eclipse. However, the sudden change from day to night and back can be confusing and stressful for animals. Wildlife behavior may also change, which could potentially upset pets.

Keeping Your Pets Safe

1. Keep Pets Indoors:
To avoid any potential risks, it’s safest to keep your pets indoors before, during, and after the eclipse. This minimizes the chance of them becoming disoriented or stressed by the sudden darkness. At Smart Dog Dallas, we’ll be ensuring all our dogs are comfortably settled indoors well in advance of the eclipse.

2. Create a Calm Environment:
Some pets may become anxious or agitated due to the sudden change in daylight. Creating a calm environment, such as a quiet room with familiar objects and perhaps some gentle background music, can help soothe their nerves.

3. Close Curtains and Blinds:
This can help prevent any confusion from the changing light conditions and keep your pet’s routine as normal as possible.

4. Stay with Your Pet:
If possible, stay with your pet during the eclipse to provide comfort and reassurance. Your presence can have a calming effect if they become anxious.

5. Secure Your Property:
Ensure that fences and gates are secure, as pets may attempt to escape if they become disoriented or panicked.

After the Eclipse

Once the eclipse is over, continue to monitor your pets for any signs of stress or anxiety. Maintain their normal routine to help them readjust to the natural light cycle.

While eclipses are a rare and exciting occurrence for humans, the safety and comfort of our pets should always come first. By taking simple precautions such as keeping pets indoors and providing a calm environment, we can ensure that both we and our pets enjoy this celestial event safely. Remember, preparation is key to a stress-free experience for everyone.
